So now we know Matched Betting is legal, I’m going to explain why.
A bookmaker is advertising that they are going to give you a free bet when you sign up to open a new account.
All you are doing is opening the new account, and claiming the free bet. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
You are also entitled to go onto a betting exchange, and place a lay bet. This has nothing to do with the bookmaker, and is also a totally legal thing to do.
This is how matched betting works, and there is nothing wrong with doing either – placing the bet with the bookmaker, and/or placing a lay bet on the betting exchange.
So, if for example, you open a new customers account with Ladbrokes, and place a £50 bet on Liverpool to beat Chelsea at Even money.
Using A Betting Exchange Isn’t Illegal
Then go onto a betting exchange, and place a lay bet of £50 on Liverpool. This gets you a £50 free bet. You can then turn the £50 free bet into around £35 in cash.
When you weigh up the facts, all you have done with Ladbrokes, is open a new account. You then placed a bet, and Ladbrokes gave you a £50 free bet. There’s nothing illegal about that.
The fact that you also placed a lay bet of Liverpool on a betting exchange, has absolutely no bearing, or absolutely nothing to do, with Ladbrokes. It is totally your business.
So Why Isn’t Everybody Doing Matched Betting?
This is a question that pops up quite a lot, and I don’t think there is a definitive answer to this.
Personally, I believe it is because people are – rightly in my view – suspicious of something that appears to be too good to be true, and so it’s just human nature to assume there must be a catch with matched betting.
You see articles claiming it is money for old rope, or pay us £15 a month and we will show you how to make £500 a month, risk free. Why wouldn’t you be suspicious of this? I certainly would be.
